A free screening will be dedicated to celebrate the cinematic talent of 5 Emirati female filmmakers on August 28th
28 August 2022 - This year for Emirati Women’s Day, Deliveroo is taking over Cinema Akil to host a special screening that will celebrate the cinematic work of 5 talented Emirati female filmmakers. The event will be hosted on the 28th of August, between 7:00 pm-9:00 pm at Cinema Akil, and is open to the public, free of charge!
Watching something on television while eating food you love is perhaps the most comforting moment of anyone’s day. Drawing inspiration from the relationship between great food and great cinema, Deliveroo has joined hands with Cinema Akil to recreate this experience for the big screen. For Emirati Women’s Day, Deliveroo has curated the evening to celebrate the region’s female talent over crunchy snackables by none other than Project Chaiwala.
The event will screen short films directed by Sarah Al Hashimi, Mariam Al Awadhi, Raihana Al Hashimi, Amna Al Nowais and Hind Abdullah, which are deeply rooted in Emirati culture. Selected films follow the themes of societal judgement, mixed cultural identity in an Emirati society, and loss of family amongst other poignant issues.
Guests at the event will receive a complimentary serving of snacks from Project Chaiwala including cups of chai and iced tea, coupled with generous portions of Smashmoosha, Popcorn and a choice of Dunkables ranging from Rusk and Cookies to Cardamom Sticks.
Emirati women continue to push the boundaries of multiple industries every day within and outside the UAE. Every year on this day, Deliveroo uses its platform to collaborate with and highlight the work of a local artist. This year, Deliveroo is celebrating not 1 but 5 women for the mark they have made in the world of filmmaking at Cinema Akil which is the GCC’s first independent cinema owned by a celebrated Emirati female entrepreneur, Butheina Kazim. This aims to recognise the emergence of genuine narratives produced by local female creatives. Their films are a testament to the inspiring role of Emirati women in an industry that up until a few years ago, was highly male-dominated.
The Emirati Women’s Day screening has limited seats available which can be reserved by sending an RSVP on the official website of Cinema Akil.
